MAY 2006 -------

Birth Order is to personality what a skeleton is to a body.

Dear Birth Order subscriber,

Welcome to the May Birth Order newsletter!

This month I want to share a letter from a Fourth Born with her permission. The letter reveals Fourth Born from a Fourth Born who lives it. This might be helpful in understanding the Fourth Borns in your life. I want to express my appreciation to Laura for writing and for giving me permission to share this letter with you. Here it is:

Dear Mr. Isaacson,

I read parts of your first book, The Birth Order Effect, several years ago and then lost track of the list of 'books to buy' it was on.

I only remembered there being a separate section on Fourth Borns, something that I hadn't found in the hours of birth order research I'd previously completed.

I was greatly relieved when I found it a couple of years later. When I sat down with it, I simply couldn't believe what I was reading. You were talking about me. Me *exactly*. I've never found anything like it in any other books describing personalities, referring to birth order or any other method. I expected some of the personality characteristics not to fit- after all, they were fairly specific and no one fits any one mold exactly right. But they are all true. And not only kind of, or slightly true, but big, huge 'parts of me' true.

I think the reason for this is that both my parents are Fourth Born, which I believe makes me a kind of Super Fourth Born. I also believe I fit into the category of super-mature Fourth Born. Among other things, I completely understood what you were saying about how we hear both ourselves and others when talking with people, and how we don't respond immediately because we take time to hear ourselves. I've been like that my whole life, and it makes it very difficult to deal with my siblings (and others) in verbal confrontations. When my sister and I get into an argument (a second born with some first born tendencies), she always ends up steamrolling me and I get frustrated with myself to the point of crying. She'll just keep tagging me with issue upon issue without giving me enough time to really think and respond to any of them. So, she constantly wins because I can't fight back in time. And I'll call her days later trying to make my point, but she rarely listens by then.

Really, I'm just writing to thank you for writing this book and figuring out what the deal with us Fourth Borns is. I've just purchased your second book from Amazon.com and can't wait to read it.

If you were ever looking for more people to do research on, please feel free to contact me. I'd be happy to help out, and considering my Fourth Born of two Fourth Borns situation, I thought I might be helpful. With families having so many fewer children, I think we Fourth Borns are a dying breed.

Thanks,

Laura

INTELLIGENCE IN BIRTH ORDER

Since this is the season of graduations it might be a good time to consider intelligence. Let’s ask if there is a relationship of intelligence to Birth Order. All the studies that have been done indicate little or no correlation between intelligence and Birth Order. However, we have discovered one correlation between Birth Order and intelligence.

We have found that when the oldest child is a Third Born in personality that person has a much higher than average intelligence, ranging in IQ from 135 to 185 in the people I have seen. If an Only Child has a Third Born personality the IQ tends to be extremely high. Of course, that personality is rare.

An oldest child can become Third Born in reaction to mother. This happens if mother is under extreme stress when the child is about two years of age. If mother is Third Born the oldest child son becomes Third Born. If mother is Second Born the oldest child daughter becomes Third Born.

The Third Born thinking pattern, comparative thinking also known as associative thinking, underlies intelligence. Without older siblings the Third Born’s thinking is unfettered during the growing up years allowing the Third Born to experience a high level of intelligence. However, this intelligence is often accompanied by a lack of “common sense” because the Third Born may not respect boundaries.

The other thinking patterns are organizational, research, evaluative and analytical. The do not contribute to the high level of intelligence of associative thinking that allows the Third Born to relate things in his or her world to make new discoveries or enhance old ones.
