JANUARY 2009 -------
Welcome to the Birth Order newsletter for January 2009. Time by Birth Order You know people who always seem to be late, sometimes extremely late. You make arrangements to do a project together and the person shows up an hour late. It seems some people cannot be on time no matter what they do. Some keep their clocks set fast to keep from being late. Some make it on time for a couple of events then are late for the next one. Friends compensate by telling the procrastinator an earlier time just so he’ll get there at the right time. What is going on with the procrastinator? Birth Order helps answer the question. Because of their organization, Onlies tend to be on time. They usually maintain a schedule in their heads and follow it. They don’t like intrusion themselves so they don’t want to intrude on someone else by being late. In fact, they often like to be early. First Borns, living in a world where love is scarce, don’t want to risk the loss of love by being late. However, they may find themselves not getting the time right so they arrive at the wrong time or even the wrong place. In paying attention to the other person’s feelings they may not pay adequate attention to the facts of time and place. They may also rely on assumptions about time and place based on what the other person usually expects rather than pay attention to the new arrangements. Second Borns, driven by the need for perfection, tend to be on time. To be on time they schedule themselves extra time so that something unexpected happening does not keep them from being on time. However, some Second Borns can be late because of commitment phobia. With commitment phobia, they try to avoid being trapped. If being on time represents being trapped they will be late on purpose. Third Borns want to be on time but are often late because they fill their time with too many things. Their schedule is so tight that when something unexpected occurs they are forced to be late. Some Third Borns compensate by setting their clocks ahead by fifteen minutes so they will have extra time. It doesn’t work because they know the clocks are fast so they take that into account. Fourth Borns tend to be on time or way off. If they are on time it is because they paid attention to the details. They listened. When they are way off it is because they were thinking their own thoughts when the arrangements were made, not paying attention to the details. The way to be on time is to pay attention to the details when plans are made rather than being caught up in thought. Tell yourself, “Never get so interested in thinking that you forget facts.”
